Job Description

Peckham Industries Inc. delivers the highest quality materials and custom solutions to thousands of road construction and road maintenance customers throughout New York and New England. We own and operate hot mix asphalt plants, concrete plants, stone quarries, liquid asphalt terminals, a precast concrete facility, as well as, a paving and road reclamation division.

Our Safety team is growing and we are seeking a Director of Safety. This is a newly created role and will lead and reinforce the safety culture at Peckham Industries, Inc. by providing strategy, leadership and subject matter expertise, and is responsible for promoting a strong workplace safety and health program for the organization. This position, in partnership with the plant and senior management, will drive the goal of “Zero Accidents” through a proactive, safe work practice that utilizes prevention and mitigation techniques when assessing potential risks.

This position can either be located at our White Plains corporate office or our Athens, NY office. Please note, we will be moving our White Plains office to Brewster, NY in mid-2019.

We are looking to hire a seasoned professional who can work with our safety team to enhance worker safety, implement engineering and operational safety solutions and foster an active workforce safety culture. Our ideal candidate for this position has highly developed communication skills, is a team player, is strategic & creative, has excellent project management skills and the ability to drive performance from all areas within the Company.

This individual will lead our safety team who will support you in the development and delivery of our Company safety program. You will work closely with field-based plant managers and personnel to administer multiple programs that focus on promoting a safe, secure and healthy workforce.

Must have a thorough knowledge of, and commitment to, industry best practices and leading safety programs. The right candidate will consistently work to further enhance safety knowledge and top performance, be capable of presenting to our Board of Directors and senior management, generating ROI reports and compiling additional financial analysis as it relates to safety programs and initiatives.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead in the development, implementation and management of our companywide safety program, plan, organize, budget, and track completion and effectiveness of activities intended to achieve safety objectives.
  • Lead the effective management, motivation, and training of safety, and regulatory compliance, identify the need for and implement controls that will eliminate hazards and work with key agency partners in the development of safety objectives and work closely with internal partners to ensure job safety/hazard analysis documentation is current and personal protective equipment needs are being met.
  • Ensure that our safety team is consistently assessing/auditing safety and health risks associated with equipment, materials, processes, facilities and job sites.
  • Maintain current knowledge of trends and practices and remain apprised of industry standards, technology, developments, and regulatory changes, identify and implement best practices into the Company’s standards to continuously improve safety practices.
  • Driving the adoption of strategic visions and ideas, building trust and confidence throughout the organization, and implementing comprehensive risk assessments and safety data analysis.
  • Responsible for the preparation and dissemination of reports as directed by management, prepare reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data; making recommendations, trends and recommended next steps.
  • Work with senior management to establish goals, metrics, and priorities for safety across the organization and manage the safety metrics, e.g. Incident/DART Rate, Severity Rate, Frequency Rate, Preventable Auto Rate and other trends to identify areas where we can continue to account for and mitigate risks and drive the safety program.
  • Measure regional performance against requirements in safety policies and identify a plan to implement and address negative trends and deficiencies.
  • Ensure consistent and timely training in Company safety policies and assist in incorporating safety standards and provide guidance and oversight to guarantee compliance with company safety policies.
  • Communicate expectations and provide consistent and appropriate feedback to our safety team to ensure performance of core competencies.
  • Manage regulatory challenges and advise senior management on recommended course of action.
  • Manage safety incidents and data integrity to ensure accurate reporting and metrics that support business safety initiatives.
  • Work closely with our safety team and insurance carriers to ensure claims are properly handled and brought to closure in a timely, cost efficient manner.
  • Manage OSHA and MSHA citations and investigations in conjunction with our safety team.
  • Analyze metrics and review monthly incidents to understand trends and align resources to focus where safety risk is frequent.
  • Audit data collection and reporting practices to confirm compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Ensure that mandatory safety and health standards are satisfied. Manage record keeping requirements related to safety and health information to meet government requirements and provide data for problem solving and decision making.
  • Establish practices and processes that determine the facts related to an accident or incident based on witness interviews, site inspections and collection of other evidence. Close calls, lessons learned, and mitigation strategies are key focus areas.

Qualifications:

  • This position requires superior communication skills and frequently interacts with company supervisors, field personnel, external vendors, senior management and the Board of Directors.
  • Strong coordination, time management, active listening, oral and written expression and comprehension, critical thinking and reasoning skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment when carrying out duties and maintain good working relationships with the public and fellow employees and members of unionized labor.

Requirements:

  • This position requires 7-10 years of safety management experience at a Director level or above and requires travel locally 70% of the time to plants and jobsites located in NY, MA, CT and VT.
  • This position requires candidates to have a valid drivers’ license with minimal violations.
  • Should emergencies arise, day, evening, night and weekend work may be required.
  • Bachelor’s Degrees in Occupational Health and Safety (or the equivalent) or bachelor’s degree combined with relevant work experience preferred.
  • Must be comfortable presenting to an audience, compiling analytical reports and communicating with employees and Board members.
  • Satisfactory completion of preemployment drug testing and applicable background check is required for this role.
