Salary Grade & Salary Range (STAFF) / Base Rate Salary Minimum (Faculty): Grade 10 / $42,314 - $63,471

Primary Purpose:
To fulfill the requirements of the NC Community College System Environmental Health and Safety Contract. This position will be based in Raleigh, NC at the NC Community College System Office. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Perform audits of 58 NC community colleges to assess safety compliance with 29CFR1910 General Industry standards. Compose professional reports detailing findings of these audits with recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Assist 58 NC community colleges in developing effective EHS programs as required by 29CFR1910 General Industry standards.
  • Conduct laboratory inspections that include fume hood testing, waste management status review, chemical storage practices review, and overall lab safety review. Compose professional reports detailing findings of these investigations with recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Conduct indoor air quality assessments including mold sampling as requested by NC Community Colleges. Compose professional reports detailing findings of these investigations with recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Prepare training aids and conduct on-site and online safety training for NC community college employees as needed and requested in accordance with 29CFR1910 General Industry standards.
  • Prepare training aids and conduct environmental health and safety training for BRCC continuing education as needed.
     

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Overnight travel is required.
  • Maintain the technical competencies necessary to the job function.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Attend and participate in all Association of Community College Safety and Security Officials (ACCSSO) functions and the annual Association of Community College Facilities Operators (ACCFO) meeting.
  • Retain active membership with National Partnership for Environmental Technology Education (PETE).
     

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Environmental Science Technology or related field required. 

Experience:
A minimum of three years’ verifiable experience at a professional level in an environment and position or positions that are specifically related to environmental safety and health. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Will possess strong personal and professional integrity, effective verbal and written communication skills, and a commitment to safety. Knowledge of NC Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) standards. Ability to train individuals in safety and environmental health topics. Use of Microsoft Office products Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. 

Physical Demands:
The ability to perform all duties associated with the position including, but not limited to lifting, prolonged standing, driving, sitting, bending, stooping, and operating or performing work with associated tools and machines.
