Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist

The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist will assist in coordinating OSTA compliance initiatives in Health and Safety, Environmental Affairs, other general compliance areas as designated. The incumbent will assist in the development and review of policies and practices for OSTA and/or its facilities, and works with Legal, Operations and Senior Management of the individual Site to facilitate compliance with company policies and applicable laws and regulations.

As an EHS Specialist working at Norwalk and as part of the larger EHS Olympus Surgical Technologies America team, you will be empowered and inspired to do your best work. You will contribute to our mission by monitoring compliance, lowering our environmental footprint, and improving our safety culture every day.

In a typical day, you will:

  • Oversee occupational health and safety matters related to facility personnel.
  • Develop and maintains a systematic occupational health and safety management program to facilitate:
    • Identification of occupational health and safety hazards
    • Utilization of physical safeguards and employee personal protective equipment to control such hazards
    • Training of employees in good health and safety management practices
    • Investigation of accidents and occupational injuries and illnesses
    • Compliance with all applicable health and safety legislation.
  • Evaluate deficiencies; establishes and implements written policies and procedures; audits to assess and ensure compliance with policies and procedures; and provides requisite training.
  • Manage general compliance matters and projects as necessary, provides assistance to ensure compliance with relevant policies and other federal laws relating to health and safety.
  • Serves as primary contact for the site’s ISO 45001 certification process.
  • Oversee environmental matters related to Olympus facilities and products.
  • Develop and maintain a systematic environmental management program to facilitate:
    • Assessment of environmental impacts of products, facilities and operations
    • Engagement of Olympus management and staff in activities related to reducing environmental impacts
    • Compliance with applicable environmental legislation.
  • Serve as a contact for Olympus regarding Olympus products and facility related environmental compliance issues.
  • Monitor environmental laws that impact Olympus products and operations.
  • Evaluate deficiencies in this area.
  • Establish and implement written policies and procedures; audits to assess and ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Provide requisite training.
  • Serve as primary contact for the site’s ISO 14001:2015 certification.
  • Develop compliance and other identified training, as necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in an applicable scientific discipline (such as Environmental Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety or Industrial Hygiene) is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience dealing with EHS policy and compliance issues is required.
  • Ability to obtain applicable professional credentials such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is necessary.
  • Must be able and willing to travel.


  • Working knowledge of federal, state and local laws related to health and safety and environmental protection is preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to plan and execute various projects simultaneously is essential.
  • Demonstrated capability to communicate with employees at all levels of the organization is necessary.
  • Analytical ability and knowledge of business processes is preferred.
  • Ability to create and deliver effective training materials is necessary.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows Office Suite software.
