Job Description:
The Polytechnic School (TPS) in the Fulton Schools of Engineering is seeking to fill the position of Lab Manager.  The successful candidate will provide leadership in the areas of safety and instruction of TPS  research labs.

Salary Range: $52,195 - $65,000 per year; DOE
Close Date: 26-July-2019 

Essential Duties:
Under administrative direction, the Lab Manager directs and manages the day-to-day operations in multiple laboratory spaces, both wet and dry.  The Lab Manager has ownership for equipment maintenance, development and communication of safety standards as it relates to both instructional and research activities in the spaces, and serves as the knowledge expert for TPS with regard to safe lab practices and procedures.


  • Hires and supervises assigned employees, including graduate and undergraduate student employees.
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the TPS research labs.
  • Maintain a listing of all equipment and locations for research group access.
  • Monitors equipment for proper functioning, performs minor repairs and calibrations on equipment and contacts appropriate party to perform major repairs.
  • Coordinates and manages ISAAC and key access to TPS research labs.
  • Maintains current knowledge of subject matter areas through participation in a variety of educations programs.
  • Leads  lab tours, including preparation and presentations of materials and lab demonstrations.
  • Serves as liaison between University facilities or ETS and faculty by relaying pertinent information on the remodeling of new TPS research labs and by discussing and resolving problems and issues in order to facilitate quick and efficient transitions.
  • Serves as liaison between EH&S and faculty for lab certifications.
  • Maintain inventory and manage relocation and salvage of all research laboratory equipment.


  • Coordinates and monitors compliance of safety procedures, policies and required training for faculty, students, and staff.  Coordinates with supervisors to limit access to research labs as needed.
  • Develops and conducts TPS RA/TA lab safety orientation sessions, directly training students, faculty, and staff.  If faculty have taken ownership of required safety training, provide oversight and monitor compliance prior to allowing access to research lab spaces.
  • Provide site-specific safety training for TPS students and post-docs for faculty researchers.
  • Manages and/or supervises daily operations of TPS research labs, including monitoring students and post-docs to ensure ongoing processes and activities comply with applicable standards and regulations.
  • Primary safety contact for TPS research labs and students, including the development and/or modification of existing procedures and policies for the operation of the labs.
  • Manages and supervises chemical inventories by establishing and maintaining par levels and restocking points and ensuring that safety standards are met.
  • Serves on committees regarding safety and environmental health issues.  Maintains current knowledge of subject matter through participation in a variety of committees.
  • Develops and/or modifies existing lab safety policies/procedures/operations in accordance with instructional and research protocols.


  • Assists faculty with research activities including planning experiments and providing input into changes or modifications to those experiments.
  • Maintain a listing of all equipment and locations for research group access.
  • Responsible for analytical techniques and trouble-shooting equipment in support of student instruction in the TPS research lab areas.
  • Monitors equipment for proper functioning, performs minor repairs and calibrations on equipment and contacts appropriate party to perform major repairs.
  • Coordinates on approval for ISAAC and key access to TPS faculty research labs.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree within an area of discipline and four (4) years of related experience which includes two (2) years laboratory management experience in a research and teaching setting and (2) years of supervisory experience; OR, Bachelor's degree within the area of the scientific discipline and six (6) years of related experience which includes two (2) years laboratory management experience in a research and teaching setting and (2) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of University Policy and Procedures; specifically Environmental, Health and Safety.
  • Demonstrated knowledge base as it relates to wet and dry laboratory operations and equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) safety standards, regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety requirements related to electrical and battery systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the University purchasing system in order to identify the proper equipment needed for the laboratories that will meet the needs of the faculty.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of supervision of laboratory staff, graduate research assistants or post-docs.
  • Experience in performing repair and/or construction of laboratory equipment.
  • Experience in developing materials and teaching safety policies and procedures and safe operational techniques to all levels of personnel associated with the laboratories.
  • Experience in problem solving and decision making.
  • Evidence of effective communication both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience in working independently without supervision.
  • Experience in First Aid Training.

Working Environment: 

  • Activities are performed in various laboratory settings; frequently required to stand and walk to other areas of the campus, and may require stooping, squatting, or moving in tight areas to maintain equipment;
  • Appropriate attire for laboratory environment i.e. long pants, steel-toed shoes, safety goggles, etc.(80%).
  • Additional activities in environmentally controlled office settings subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse. (20%)
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 65 pounds (40%).
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills on the telephone, in email, in public and interpersonal settings with multiple ethnic and cultural groups.
  • Calculator, telephone, computer (monitor, keyboard and mouse), printer, fax machine and copier.
