General Dynamics Mission Systems (GDMS) has an opening for an Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist to join our team in Kilgore, Texas.  The position provides an opportunity to work on projects that support some of our nation’s fundamental defense services. GDMS employees work closely with esteemed customers to develop solutions that allow them to carry out high-stakes national security missions.


Key Responsibilities

The EHS Specialist will report directly to the EHS West Region Manager while overseeing operations at the site.  Responsibilities include:

  • Participate in developing, managing, and seeking to continually improve all required EHS programs, processes and instructions in order to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal EHS regulations, including but not limited to US EPA, OSHA, and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)
  • Engaging and collaborating with stakeholders, to include Facilities and Manufacturing staff, to develop a culture of continuously improving EHS performance
  • Develop site specific metrics/objectives in collaboration with on-site personnel and ensuring implementation of programming to meet these set objectives
  • Experience managing compliance to site environmental permits and sampling based on permit requirements to include:
    • Stormwater (auditing and sampling, with knowledge of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)),
    • Air permitting and associated reporting of emission data and control equipment operations,
    • Resource Conservation and Recovery Act training and knowledge of waste characterization and disposal
    • National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP), as required
  • Managing compliance to OHSA programs while evaluating potential hazards in work areas and for new processes/procedures.  Programs include:Performing routine inspections of entire facility insuring continual audit-ready compliance with EHS policies and procedures, conduct accident investigations, root cause and corrective/preventive actions
    • Powered Industrial Vehicles (PIVs)
    • Lock-out/Tag-out and Electrical Safety
    • Confined Space
    • Evaluation and recommendations for Personal Protective Equipment
    • Routine ergonomic evaluations
    • Risk assessments to evaluate hazardous conditions and practices to develop control solutions utilizing Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)
    • Chemical Safety
    • Contractor Management
  • Lead ISO 14001 / OHSAS 18001 audits (including internal auditing and support of third party auditing processes) and maintain site certification to both standards
  • Providing new ideas and methods to improve safety and environmental processes


Experience, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science / Engineering and/or Occupational Health & Safety and two years of relevant experience
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as rules and regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, internal procedures and instructions
  • Highly effective interpersonal communication skills required
  • Highly effective written skills, including the ability to create and update documentation including audit reports, procedures, presentations, and training materials
  • Ability to meet deadlines, multi-task effectively, and deal professionally with all levels of internal customers and co-workers while promoting a climate of positive relationships
